Carmakers are rushing to provide their vehicles with increasing ability to pilot themselves. But the race can create confusion among about just what “autonomous driving” really means.
SAE International has developed precise definitions for six levels of driving automation ranging from zero (100% human control) to five (0% human control). Barbara Wendling, a principal engineer with Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, explains the terminology.
