U.K.-based Williams Advanced Engineering Ltd. has developed a lightweight platform for electric vehicles designed to accommodate a variety of body types.

The company, an offshoot of Williams Group’s Formula One team, unveiled the FW-EVX concept at this week’s Low Carbon Vehicle show in Millbrook, England. Executives hope to market the platform as an off-the-shelf architecture to carmakers for future EVs.

Williams touts the FW-EVX’s innovations in battery pack design, cooling systems and lightweight construction. The latter includes what the company calls a “highly automated, near-zero-waste process” for fiber-reinforced suspension components that yields a 40% weight savings compared to aluminum wishbone units.

Williams also has created an exoskeleton for the battery module, which serves a structural component. The engineering firm developed the platform in-house using specialists in aerodynamics, electric systems, advanced lightweight structures and vehicle integration.
