Volkswagen AG plans to expand its global workforce to 600,000 employees by 2018 from 550,000 now, the company's top labor official tells German business daily Handelsblatt.
But most of those jobs will be added outside the EU in such countries as China, India and Russia, says Bernd Osterloh, chairman of VW's works council and a member of the company's supervisory board.
Osterloh adds that VW also expects to hire more workers in the U.S. as it boosts production at its assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., or opens a new plant in the country.
The hiring spree will be part of VW's drive to surpass Toyota Motor Corp. as the world's top-selling automaker by 2018.
