Volkswagen AG is partnering with electric motor specialist Anhaltische Elektromotorenwerk (AEM) Dessau GmbH and researchers at Otto von Guericke Universitat in Magdeburg, Germany, to increase the driving range of electric vehicles.

Under the three-year, €2 million ($2.3 million) project, the partners will focus on improving overall efficiency by storing the energy generated from regenerative braking in a separate capacitor for use during acceleration and other high-load applications. The system promises to extend driving range by reducing the drain on the battery pack.

The team also will use the university’s anechoic chamber to study and reduce electromagnetic interference in EVs.
