Volkswagen AG has released teaser images of a large hybrid-electric concept crossover/SUV that will be unveiled later this month at the Beijing auto show.
The concept is expected to preview the next-generation Touareg large SUV due next year. VW says the vehicle reflects the sporty, high-tech direction it plans to take in the premium SUV segment, building on the design of the smaller Tiguan crossover.
Styling cues include a muscular front end with wide shoulders and C-shaped LED lights. The interior will feature a lounge-like layout with a host of advanced digital displays and controls, according to the carmaker.
The concept’s plug-in hybrid powertrain produces 381 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. VW estimates the vehicle can travel 31 miles in all electric mode and get 78 mpg on the European driving cycle.
