Volkswagen AG plans to launch an electric version of its Crafter large commercial van next year in Europe. The carmaker previewed the vehicle with its e-Crafter concept at this week’s commercial vehicle show in Hanover, Germany.
The near-production concept is powered by a 100-kW electric motor and a 43-kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted under the cargo compartment. The vehicle, which is designed for daily city applications, has a 130-mile driving range with its speed electronically limited to about 50 mph.
The battery can be replenished to 80% in 45 minutes via a quick-charger system. VW says the electrical architecture is designed to accommodate larger next-generation batteries as they are introduced.
The 5,600-lb electric van has nearly 400 cu-ft of cargo space and a 3,750-lb payload capacity. Styling differs from the base diesel-powered Crafter, which was named the best transport van of the year for 2017 by a panel of 24 European journalists. The award was announced at the Hanover show.
