Volkswagen AG has begun building its first all-electric vehicle in China, a small crossover called the Sol E20X, at a plant in Hefei.

The car is based on partner Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co.’s conventionally powered S7 crossover. The two companies formed JAC Volkswagen Automotive, an all-electric carmaking venture, a year ago. The company has capacity to build 100,000 EVs per year.

The partners have provided few details about the Sol E20X, except to say it has a range of 300 km (186 miles) per charge. The car will go on sale in China in the second half of 2018.
