VW, Jianghuai May Form Venture to Make EVs and Plug-in Hybrids

Volkswagen AG and China’s Jianghuai Automobile Co. have agreed to study plans for a joint venture to make electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles for the Chinese market.
VW and JAC say they envision an alliance that encompasses joint development, production, sales and mobility services for an array of “new energy” vehicles. The companies hope to sign a formal agreement early next year.
Heifei-based JAC is China’s ninth-largest carmaker and one of the only large producers in the country with no foreign partner. VW currently assembles conventionally powered vehicles in China through ventures with China FAW Group and SAIC Motor Corp.
Last week China’s cnpickups.com website reported that VW and JAC plan to sign a separate agreement later this month to jointly produce pickup trucks for the Chinese market.
