AB Volvo has warned that a flawed emission control component could force it to recall thousands of its big commercial trucks worldwide.
The company predicts a “material” impact on earning but says it and regulators have not yet completed an analysis of the problem.
At issue is an unspecified diesel emission control component that suffers material degradation more quickly than expected, thereby allowing nitrogen oxides emissions to creep above regulatory limits over time. Most of the affected vehicles were sold in Europe and the U.S., where diesel emission limits are especially stringent, according to the company.
Volvo Trucks emphasizes that the flaw poses no safety threat and does not affect other performance aspects of the engine. The company adds that the degradation does not affect all engines and vehicles in the same way and to the same extent.
