AB Volvo says it will eliminate 734 of the 2,800 jobs at its factory in Dublin, Va., over a three-week period beginning in February.
The company tells the Associated Press the cutback is due to a downturn in North American demand for its big highway trucks as operators complete the renewal of their fleets.
The 1.6 million-sq-ft Virginia facility is Volvo Truck’s largest assembly plant anywhere. The company says it will move ahead in spite of the cutbacks with plans announced in September to spend $38 million to upgrade the factory.
AP reports the investment will include a 36,000 sq-ft addition that houses a product showroom, training facilities, a 200-seat theater and an observation area adjoining a 1.1-mile customer test-drive track.
