Volvo Car Corp. plans to abandon exclusively internal combustion powertrains for its cars and replace them with piston-electric hybrids or all-electric propulsion systems.

CEO Hakan Samuelsson notes that Volvo's plan to add electric motors throughout its product line “marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car” at the company.

Volvo's future powertrain lineup will consist of fully electric, gasoline-hybrid, diesel-hybrid and 48-volt "mild" hybrids.

The company says it intends to introduce five such hybrid and EV models between 2019 and 2021. Two of those vehicles will be produced by Volvo’s Polestar performance unit. Last month the company said it is spinning off Polestar, which will develop and sell high-performance electrified vehicles under its own brand. Polestar's first model is due this autumn.
