U.S. safety regulators have upgraded their investigation into reports of 27 engine fires in Daimler AG’s tiny Smart ForTwo city cars.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began looking into the problem last December. The agency says the problem could affected almost 43,000 of the 2008-2009 model vehicles in sold in the U.S.
NHTSA has elevated its probe to an engineering analysis, a step that often signals an impending recall. The agency says Daimler has investigated two fires but hasn’t found a common cause.
