Serious injuries and fatalities from vehicle crashes in the U.S. are up sharply this year, according to the National Safety Council.
Fatalities in January-June climbed 14% to nearly 19,000 and serious injuries jumped 30% to 2.2 million, NSC estimates. It figures the cost of such crashes, including property damage, zoomed 24% to $152 billion.
At the current pace, full-year fatalities would reach about 40,000, the worse since 2007, according to the group.
NSC theorizes that an improving economy, 30% lower fuel prices and growth in miles driven may explain the increase compared with the same period in 2014.
