Sales of plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles in the U.S. have increased in each of the last five months and set an all-time record of more than 16,000 units in September, according to a report by the Dept. of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
The study says cumulative sales since the Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid sedan and Nissan Leaf EV were launched in late 2010 surpassed 500,000 units last month. The Volt and Leaf combined to account for about 40% of the total.
The number of plug-in hybrid and EV models offered has nearly tripled from 11 to 27 over the last four years and is due to expand even more in coming years, DOT notes. New models will include the upcoming Chevrolet Bolt EV, which battery supplier LG Chem predicts will have sales of 30,000 units next year.
