New cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. last year averaged the best fuel economy ever, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

EPA says new cars averaged 28.6 mpg and light trucks averaged 21.1 mpg last year. Both figures were up 0.7 mpg compared with 2014. The overall fleet average rose 0.5 mpg to a record-high 24.8 mph.

The agency predicts this year’s average will jump to 25.6 mpg in spite of the popularity of less-efficient trucks and the continuing decline in small-car sales.
