Employers added a scant 69,000 jobs in the U.S. in May, the smallest monthly increase in a year, the Dept. of Labor reports.
The country's unemployment rate edged up to 8.2% last month from 8.1% in April the first increase since last July in part because more job seekers entered the market last month, the Labor Dept. says.
The private sector added 82,000 jobs and government payrolls shrank by 13,000 jobs. The government also reduced its previous estimates for March and April employment downward by a total of 49,000 jobs.
The number of Americans who have been out of work for six months or longer grew to 5.4 million from 5.1 million in April.
