American employers created 96,000 jobs in August, down from 141,000 in July and this year's average of 139,000 jobs per month, according to the Dept. of Labor.
The unemployment rate fell to 8.1% from 8.3% in July, but only because 368,000 people stopped looking for work, the Labor Dept. says. Only 63.5% of working-age Americans have a job or are seeking one, the lowest proportion in 31 years.
Private employers added 100,000 jobs last month, but government shed 7,000 posts.
Economists say the weak employment data increases the likelihood that the Federal Reserve will act to stimulate the economy when central bank policy makers meet Wednesday and Thursday.
