Americans are more upbeat this month about economic prospects than they have been since February, according to the New York City-based Conference Board.
The research group's Consumer Confidence Index climbed to 70.3 from an upwardly revised 61.3 in August. The board says consumers are optimistic about current job availability and about prospects for employment, business conditions and their own financial situation in coming months.
The group's measure of current conditions advanced, and its gauge of expectations for the next six months surged nearly 13 points to 83.7.
Consumer confidence is closely watched because spending by individuals accounts for 70% of the U.S. economy.
