Consumer optimism about future growth for the American economy reached a 65-month high in June, the New York City-based Conference Board reports.

The research group's Consumer Confidence Index climbed to 85.2 this month, its highest since January 2008. The index is measured against a base of 100 in 1985.

Consumer optimism about current conditions rose to 85.1 from 80.3. Confidence about conditions several months from now increased to 85.2 from 83.5 in May.

The research group describes overall consumer confidence "moderately more favorable" with "quite positive" momentum.

The Conference Board says 23% of respondents consider current business conditions "good" compared with 21% who thought so in May. Consumer expectations about business conditions over the next six months increased one point to about 19%. Those expecting more jobs in the months ahead also rose one point to more than 16%.
