The American economy added 209,000 jobs last month, marking the sixth consecutive month of plus-200,000 positions, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.
BLS also upwardly revised its new-jobs data for May and June, adding 15,000 jobs over the two-month period. The agency says the manufacturing sector added 28,000 jobs 14,600 of them in the auto industry in July.
Average hourly earnings rose 4 cents to $20.61 in July.
Analysts say the continuing jobs growth shows the economy's recovery remains on track. The U.S. must add at least 150,000 positions per month just to keep pace with population growth.
Analysts consider it a good sign that last month's jobless rate increased slightly to 6.2%. The reason: It shows formerly discouraged workers are returning to the job market. But analysts also caution that the number of people out of work for at least six months remained unchanged at 3.2 million about one-third the total number of Americans looking for work.
