GKN plc says it has won several contracts for the latest version of its eAxle technology for compact plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The only application identified is BMW’s 2 Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid currently being launched in Europe. GKN has begun production for that vehicle at its facility in Bruneck, Italy.
GKN says the new eAxle provides significant improvements over the previous generation system in terms of performance, size and cost. Optimized for compact cars, the system weighs 46 lbs—making it about 25% lighter than its predecessor.
The single-speed module is integrated into the rear assembly of a front-wheel-drive vehicle, which GKN says makes it easier to install than a hybrid module bolted on to the main transmission. Transmitting power directly to the wheels for quicker response and faster acceleration, the two-stage system provides as much as 70 kW of additional power and significantly more torque, according to the supplier.
An electromechanically actuated clutch disconnects the electric motor at higher vehicle speeds, and an open coupling minimizes rotating losses when disengaged. In addition, gear and bearing arrangements have also been optimized for efficiency, NVH and durability, GKN says.
