Volkswagen AG’s namesake division has appointed Thomas Ulbrich to lead the brand’s e-mobility operations worldwide, effective Feb 1.
Ulbrich, who joined Volkswagen Group in 1989, has been a part of VW’s management board since 2008. He mostly was in charge of production and logistics.
Andreas Tostmann has been appointed to the VW’s management board to succeed Ulbrich as production chief. Tostmann joined VW Group in 1990, mostly recently serving as production boss for the carmaker’s SEAT unit.
In his new role, Ulbrich will oversee VW’s recently created e-mobility unit to support the company’s aggressive electrification plans. His new responsibilities include electric vehicle manufacturing and leading the company’s EV development center in the Czech Republic.
Ulbrich previously held top management roles for two of VW’s joint ventures in China. He also was in charge of production for the company’s commercial vehicles unit worldwide.
Under its new I.D. sub-brand, VW plans to launch five EVs in coming years. The models will be built on the company’s new MEB electric car platform, which is expected to underpin 1 million models across all VW Group brands by 2025.
