The U.K., which last July declared it would ban all forms of piston-powered vehicles by 2040, is backing away from that target.

Now the government is expected to announce a “mission” to make itself a world leader in developing and building zero-emission vehicles, the Financial Times reports. The London-based newspaper says Britain also is likely to set a goal that half of all cars on its roads by 2030 will be ultra-low-emission vehicles.

The new pollution objectives will be detailed in Prime Minister Theresa May’s repeatedly delayed “Road-to-Zero Strategy,” now due on June 20. Environmentalists complain that waffling over its electric-car strategy will hamper the U.K.’s attempt to position itself as a global leader in the field.
