UAW Workers Ratify Nexteer Labor Pact

United Auto Workers union workers at Nexteer Automotive Group Ltd.’s plant in Saginaw, Mich., have approved a second-round labor agreement by a 61% margin.
The vote follows by 10 days the 97% rejection of an initial proposal. The new five-year contract will expire in mid-March 2020. Compared to the earlier offer, the ratified deal includes a richer signing bonus ($2,000 compared with $1,500), heftier wage hikes for most workers and elimination of a requirement that workers pay as much as $350 toward their monthly healthcare premiums.
Under the new contract, Nexteer workers will earn between $15.88 and $18.69 per hour by the end of the agreement. that compares with a range of $15.85-$17.25 in the original proposal.
Nexteer, the former Saginaw Steering Gear unit of General Motors Co., is a $3 billion-per-year maker of steering and driveline systems. The company was acquired in 2010 by China’s Pacific Century Motors Inc.
