The Turkish government has formed a consortium of five domestic companies to launch the country’s first national car, an electric sedan based on the Saab 9-3, in 2021.

Turkey has licensed the 9-3’s technology from Chinese-owned National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB. NEVS, which acquired the assets and intellectual property of bankrupt Saab in 2012, unveiled its own production-ready 9-3 electric sedan and 9-3X electric crossover vehicle in June.

Turkey’s version of the car is likely to include an onboard, piston-powered generator to extend the vehicle’s driving range, according to Autoweek. The enthusiast magazine says NEVS will help set up a distribution network for the car, which will not use the Saab name.

The car project will be headed by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. The five participating Turkish companies are Anadolu Group, BMC, Kiraca Holding, Turkcell and Zorlu Holding.
