President Donald Trump declares the U.S. is “not ready” to make a trade pact with China, even though he believes China “would like to make a deal.”
Trump tells reporters he believers “absolutely” that the two countries will arrive at a trade agreement eventually. But he has backed off from predicting a quick deal after U.S. trade negotiators accused China two weeks ago of reneging on key elements in a tentative deal.
China denies a shift in its position and insists it continues to seek “friendly consultations and negotiations.” The country also claims U.S. tariffs are having little effect on its own economy, contrary to Trump’s assertion to the contrary.
Trump reiterated his threat to add tariffs covering another $325 billion in imported Chinese goods. Similar U.S. tariffs already cover $250 billion in such items.
