Congressional lawmakers from carmaking states have urged President Donald Trump to press Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to remove auto-related trade impediments when the two leaders meet today.
The Detroit News cites three letters to Trump from predominantly Democratic representatives who complain of “longstanding” unfair trade practices, currency manipulation and non-tariff barriers to Japan’s home market.
The American Automotive Policy Council, a Washington, D.C.-based trade group, concurs. In a statement it declares that any discussion of bilateral trade between the countries should include the question of Japan opening up its market “in a meaningful way” to American-brand vehicles.
