The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has warned California that it may lose federal highway funding because it hasn’t detailed its plan to reduce conventional air pollution, sources tell Bloomberg News.
The threat comes days after the Trump administration launched EPA-backed steps to revoke the state’s authority to curb carbon dioxide emissions from cars.
The agency’s alert was made in a letter from EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler, Bloomberg says. In it, Wheeler asserts that California has failed to satisfy basic air quality standards mandated by the Clear Air Act of 1970.
Wheeler urges California to work with EPA to develop a plan to resolve its shortcomings and avoid “statutory triggers” that could cut off its federal highway funding.
