President Donald Trump says he is ready to impose protective U.S. tariffs on virtually all goods from China.
Trump began two weeks ago with a 10% import tax on several hundred Chinese items worth $34 billion. When China reciprocated with matching tariffs a day later, Trump quickly expanded the list to cover more than 6,000 items worth $200 billion. The expanded levies won’t take effect until the end of August.
Now he says he is “ready to go” to extend the tariff to cover all imported Chinese goods, a collection that represent about $500 billion in trade with the U.S.
Trump has complained for months about China’s huge trade surplus with the U.S., which he attributes to unfair taxes and business practices. He also wants China to stop “stealing” intellectual property by requiring foreign companies to access the fast-growing Chinese market through partnerships with local companies.
