Toyota’s China Venture to Debut Its First EV This Year

Toyota Motor Corp. is accelerating plans to introduce all-electric vehicles in China with a model later this year that will carry the brand of local partner Guangzhou Automobile Group, The Nikkei reports.
Sales of GAC’s ix4 crossover vehicle will be handled by the partners’ GAC Toyota Motor joint venture and its network of some 5,000 dealerships. Details about the price and performance of the ix4 have not yet been announced.
Toyota aims to introduce 10 electrified models under its own brand over the next two years, starting with plug-in hybrid Corolla and Levin sedans in 2019. The carmaker has said it expects electrified powertrains will account for more than half its worldwide sales by 2030, including more than 1 million battery or fuel cell models.
Chinese government statistics indicate that sales of plug-ins and battery-electric cars in the country zoomed to 780,000 units last year, accounting for more than half of global deliveries of such vehicles.
