Toyota Motor Corp. is partnering with two Chinese carmakers to develop hybrid vehicles for the local market, Nikkei Asian Review reports. It says the first of the new models will debut in 2015.

Toyota already assembles hybrids in China with partners China FAW Group and Guangzhou Automobile Group. But those cars use motors and batteries imported from Japan. The resulting vehicles cost about 200,000 yuan ($32,800), roughly twice the price of a conventionally powered model.

Nikkei says Toyota is now ready to divulge some of its hybrid technology to its partners in an effort to locally source more components.

Toyota will work with FAW and Guangzhou Automotive to find a local battery producer. The company also will share its hybrid system control technologies with the two Chinese carmakers, according to the Nikkei Review. The newspaper says Toyota will coordinate the co-development work through its R&D center outside Shanghai.
