Toyota Motor Corp. will unveil a new variant of its Prius hybrid car next week at the New York auto show.
A teaser photo of the vehicle, which Toyota boasts will be the next “mechanical marvel” in the Prius lineup, shows a darkened rear-end highlighted by distinctive wraparound light-emitting-diode taillights. The company didn’t elaborate other than to say the new model would feature “standout” styling and “intelligent eco-tech.”
Media reports speculate that the new vehicle will be a plug-in hybrid variant of the fourth-generation Prius sedan introduced earlier this year. The plug-in version of the third-generation Prius wasn't nearly successful as the base model, with sales averaging just over 10,000 units per year.
Other possibilities for the New York introduction include updated versions of the Prius C hatchback or Prius V crossover vehicle. Toyota also has said it is planning an even more efficient “Eco” version of the Prius, but that vehicle isn’t expected until sometime later.
