Toyota Motor Corp. plans by the end of the decade to introduce mass-market electric vehicles, perhaps including an SUV/crossover, that can cover at least 300 km (185 miles) per charge, according to The Nikkei, which cites no sources.
The company has been cool to EVs until now, believing that high battery costs and relatively low driving range would restrict demand. The Nikkei says Toyota has altered its view because of advances in battery performance, a growing charging infrastructure and the spread of government programs that promote EV sales.
Toyota could set up a team by early next year to develop the EVs, the newspaper says. It adds that Toyota will mobilize its group affiliates to enable a production launch by 2020. Such a timetable would coincide with the Tokyo Olympics, where the company already plans to showcase its fuel cell technology.
The Nikkei says Toyota aims to market the EVs in major markets, including China, where government programs are helping to drive demand.
