Toyota Motor Corp. is preparing to fix a software flaw in about 625,000 of its Prius hybrid sedans and minivans that could unexpectedly shut down the powertrain.
Toyota reports no crashes or injuries linked to the defect. Affected vehicles were sold between early 2010 and late 2014. The recall covers 340,000 units in Japan, 160,000 in Europe and about 120,000 in North America, according to the company.
Dealers will reprogram software that operates the vehicle's motor/generator and hybrid control computers. Toyota says the current software settings can allow components to overheat, triggering a "failsafe" mode or completely switching off power to the wheels.
