Toyota Motor Corp. plans to recall 2.4 million of its hybrid vehicles worldwide to fix a problem that could make the cars suddenly stall.
The callback involves certain Prius and Auris hybrids built between October 2008 and November 2014. About 1.3 million of the affected vehicles are in Japan, 807,000 in the U.S. and 290,000 in Europe.
Toyota says the issue occurs under rare circumstances involving hard acceleration, in which the vehicle stalls instead of entering a “failsafe” operating mode. Dealers intend to fix the flaw with a software update.
Some of the vehicles are part of another recall of about 1 million vehicles, including 192,000 in the U.S., that involves a wiring harness defect that could cause a fire.
