Toyota Motor Corp. tells suppliers in Japan it expects to boost domestic sales of hybrid vehicles 11% to 760,000 units in 2016, The Nikkei reports.
Meeting the target would increase the proportion of hybrid-powered cars sold by Toyota in Japan to about 50% from 44% last year. Over the same period the company plans to hike domestic production of hybrid vehicles, many of them for export, by 30% to 1.3 million.
Toyota is expanding its hybrid lineup in Japan, in part to capitalize on government tax breaks for buyers of such vehicles. The Nikkei says hybrid passenger vehicles are likely to capture 40% of Japan's new-car market by next year.
