Tokyo District Court has rejected a motion by prosecutors to deny bail to Carlos Ghosn, who has been jailed since Nov. 19.
Ghosn is expected to post the necessary 1 billion-yen ($8.9 million) bond tomorrow, but it isn’t clear when he will be released. Observers note that prosecutors also could re-arrest Ghosn on a new charge, a routine tactic used under Japanese law to keep suspects incarcerated.
Under terms of his bail, Ghosn must remain in Japan, accept 24-hour video surveillance, stay during the day at his lawyer’s office, use a phone that has no email or internet service and submit to other unspecified controls that limit his ability to contact people and prevent him from tampering with evidence.
Ghosn’s new lead attorney, Junichiro Hironaka, tells reporters that the executive’s trial may not begin until autumn.
