Tesla Inc. delivered 26,200 electric vehicles in the third quarter, up 5% from July-September 2016.
Almost all the EVs were Model S sedans and Model X crossover vehicles. Tesla delivered only 220 of its Model 3 electric sedans, which went into low-volume production in July. Initial versions of the $35,000 car are well-equipped editions priced at $44,000.
CEO Elon Musk blames the low volume for Model 3 sales on unspecified manufacturing bottlenecks. He said earlier this year that Tesla expected to assemble 1,500 of the cars in September alone.
Tesla is targeting monthly output for the Model 3 at 20,000 units by year-end and 50,000 units by the end of 2018. Meeting those goals is crucial for the company to move from a money-losing niche player to a profitable mass marketer of electric vehicles.
