Tesla Motors Inc., which launched heavily equipped $132,000 versions of its Model X electric crossover in September, says the base edition will debut in early 2016 at $80,000.
The company currently is delivering several hundred top-end Founders and Signature variants of the Model X. On Monday it opened its online configurator for buyers who put down deposits of $5,000 or more for the conventional version of the vehicle.
Tesla says the $80,000 base model will be fitted with a 70-kWh battery that can propel the car for 220 miles and accelerate it from zero to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds. That’s 37 miles less and 1.2 seconds slower than the top-of-the-line P90D version.
Options for the standard Model X, most of which are standard on the top-of-the-line versions, include seating for six or seven, towing and cold-weather packages, an audio system upgrade, an air suspension and Tesla’s semi-autonomous Autopilot self-driving system.
