A Tesla owners group says it set a new range record for a production electric vehicle by driving a Model S 100D sedan 1,078 km (about 670 miles) over the weekend on public roads in southern Italy.
The trek bested the previous 901-km (560-mile) set in a Tesla Model S P100D in Belgium. The five-driver Italian team averaged about 25 mph, consuming 98.4 kWh of electricity (equivalent to about 3.8 gallons of gasoline) over 29 hours.
The record was set in an unmodified Model S 100D equipped with low-rolling-resistance tires. To maximize efficiency, the car was operated in Tesla’s ’s semi-autonomous Autopilot mode with the heating and air conditioning system turned off. The base Model S 100D has a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated range of 335 miles.
The record was certified by a notary, who sealed the flap over the charging port before the drive began.
