One of Tesla Inc.’s all-electric “Semi” heavy-duty trucks made its first official cargo delivery this week.
The trek covered about 260 miles, taking battery packs from the company’s Gigafactory in Nevada to its car manufacturing plant in Fremont, Calif. Tesla says the base Semi has a driving range of 300 miles and higher end models can travel 500 miles or more when fully loaded.
The demonstration comes in the same week that rivals Waymo and Uber have touted their own autonomous truck evaluations, including the hauling of actual loads.
In December, Tesla said it had received more than 400 orders for the Semi. The vehicles cost as much as $200,000 apiece.
