Tesla Motors Inc. is recalling its just-introduced Model X electric crossover vehicle to strengthen third-row seats that could collapse in a crash.
The callback covers all 2,700 of the $81,000 cars built before March 26. Tesla discovered the problem during in-house crash tests for units destined for the European market.
Tesla expects to complete repairs within the next five weeks. Until then, it advises owners not to use the third-row seats.
The company blames the problem on a manufacturing error by Australian supplier Futuris Automotive. Futuris also initially supplied the Model X’s complex second-row seating system. Tesla has since taken over production of those second-row assemblies.
The company said last week its output of the Model X climbed to 750 per week at the end of March. The launch was delayed and output slowed by problems with the car’s gullwing doors and complex second-row seating system.
