Tesla Motors Inc. says its $35,000 Model 3 electric sedan due in 2017 will be joined by a crossover variant, doubling the company's lineup to four models, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The company's $76,000 Model S electric sedan will be supplemented by the similarly priced Model X crossover, which shares the same platform, this autumn.
Tesla co-founder and Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel says Tesla is working on unspecified additional EVs to add after the Model 3 debuts. He predicts the company will have 1 million cars on the road by 2020 and achieve annual sales of 500,000 units.
Last year Tesla sold about 33,000 cars worldwide. The company has targeted sales of 55,000 vehicles in 2015.
