Tesla Motors Inc. wirelessly distributed a software update over the weekend that enables owners of its electric Model S sedans and just-introduced Model X crossovers to park their vehicles remotely.
The feature can be activated when the driver stops within about 30 feet of the proposed parking spot and exits the car. The owner can then command the vehicle to park itself by using the key fob or a smartphone app. Tesla says the feature also can be used at home to open the garage door, park the car and close the door automatically.
The update includes a tweak to the company’s semi-autonomous Autopilot self-driving feature. The adjustment will make a vehicle operating in automatic mode slow down to no more than 5 mph above the posted speed limit on residential streets and roads that lack clearly defined lanes.
Tesla says the update can be used in about 60,000 of its vehicles built after September 2014.
