AAA has named the 2015 Tesla Model S 70D electric sedan as its Green Car of the Year.
The vehicle edged out the 2014 BMW i3 and 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf, which finished second and third, respectively. Both models are full electric vehicles.
Rounding out the top five on the U.S. auto club’s list are the 2016 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, which is a plug-in hybrid hatchback, and the 2015 Subaru Outback SUV with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that has an EPA fuel economy rating of 25 mpg.
AAA evaluated 81 vehicles from its 2016 Green Car Guide. Scores from previous years were used if no significant powertrain changes were made to a 2016 model vehicle. Scores were based on a combination of performance metrics and real-world driving observations, including fuel efficiency, acceleration, cargo capacity, handling and comfort.
The $75,000 Model S 70D, which also won top green honors in AAA’s large-car and over-$50,000 categories, was praised for its 240-mile driving range, fast-charging, acceleration and steering characteristics. AAA also gave the EV high marks for its roominess and styling.
The i3 Bimmer was voted the best green model priced between $30,000 and $50,000. The 2014 Mazda 3S Grand Touring small car was deemed the best vehicle priced under $30,000. Other category winners included the diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec 4matic (midsize car), VW eGolf (compact), BMW i3 (subcompact), Outback (SUV/minivan) and Ford F-150 Supercab Lariat (pickup truck).
The AAA green award winners received trophies made of sustainable bamboo and recycled aluminum.
