Tesla Motors Inc. CEO Elon Musk tells The Nikkei the electric car company intends to increase the number of its solar-powered Supercharger stations in Japan from six to 30 this year.
The additional quick-charge facilities will enable owners of the company's $84,000 Model S electric sedan to drive the length of Japan's main island of Honshu, according to Musk. He says Tesla aims to eventually install hundreds of the stations, which can replenish the Model S's battery to 50% in about 20 minutes.
Musk tells The Nikkei Tesla expects to sell "a few thousand" EVs in Japan. He predicts sales will accelerate when the company introduces its lower-priced Model 3 electric sedan two years from now.
