China’s industry ministry says Tesla Inc. won’t be assessed the 10% import tariff that applies to other electric vehicles built outside the country.

The exemption covers all Tesla vehicles sold in China, Bloomberg News reports. The announcement comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk visited a tech conference in Shanghai, met with local officials and toured the EV assembly plant his company is building nearby.

Tesla hopes to begin limited local production of its Model 3 electric sedan in China by the end of this year. The factory eventually will also make EV batteries and Tesla’s upcoming Model Y midsize crossover vehicle.

Bloomberg says list prices for the Model 3 in China rose 2% to 363,900 yuan ($50,900) today. Tesla posted similar hikes for its Model S sedan (to 793,900 yuan) and Model X crossover (to 809,900 yuan).
