Tesla Motors Inc. blames delivery problems associated with its advanced automatic driving system for a 9% drop in sales of its electric vehicles in October-December.

Delays cut nearly 3,000 from the company’s expected fourth-quarter sales. Volume gained 27% year on year but was 2,300 units below sales in the third quarter of 2016.

Tesla’s full-year sales were 76,200 units, about 5% short of meeting a company target of 80,000-90,000 vehicles. The company sells vehicle directly to customers and doesn’t count a sale until the vehicle is physically delivered to its buyer.

Tesla says it has about 6,500 vehicles in transit that will appear in its first-quarter sales results for 2017.
