Tesla Inc. has been officially approved to begin delivering its Model 3 electric sedans in Europe by Dutch regulatory agency RDW.
Bloomberg News says buyers are expected to begin receiving their cars in February. As in the U.S., Tesla initially is offering only its duel-motor, long-range variant, which costs $51,000 (€44,900) in the U.S.
The cheapest Model 3 currently available in the American market is a rear-drive version with a range of 264 miles (425 km) that retails for $44,000. CEO Elon Musk told employees last week that a major corporate goal is to launch the originally touted $34,000 entry-level iteration later this year.
Tesla hasn’t revealed European sales targets for the Model 3, the company’s first relatively high-volume model and one considered critical to sustainable profitability. The region’s midsize luxury sedan market, in which the Model 3 will compete, is more than twice as large as the same segment in the U.S., according to Tesla.
