Suzuki Motor Corp., which controls half the Indian car market, aims to hike annual sales there from about 1.7 million units currently to 5 million by 2030.
Chairman Osamu Suzuki, 88, says the company is determined to maintain its market share as the overall Indian market expands by an average 9% per year. At that pace, new-car sales in the country would reach 10 million units by 2030 from 3.2 million today.
The chairman adds that Suzuki plans to make 30% of the models it sells in India, which represent 1.5 million units per year, electric by 2030.
India has been Suzuki’s largest national market for the past three years. But the Nikkei points out that achieving 5 million sales there is a monumental goal. The newspaper points out that no carmaker has yet sold that many vehicles in one country in one year.
